Columbia
The Route

COLUMBIA

The country is located in north-western South America, bordered to the east by Venezuela and Brazil to the south by Ecuador and Peru; to the north by the Caribbean Sea; to the northwest by Panama; and to the west by the Pacific Ocean.

Colombia is the 26th largest country by area and the 27th largest by population, and the third largest in South America after Brazil and Argentina.  With over 46 million people, Colombia has the second largest population of any Spanish-speaking country in the world, after Mexico.  It is also the only country in South America having coasts in the Pacific Ocean and in the Atlantic Ocean.  Colombia is a middle power, with the fourth largest economy in Latin America, and the third largest in South America.

Everything I have read about Columbia suggests that this is a very beautiful country.  Many other expedition cyclists describe Columbia as one of their favourite and most friendliest country they have passed through.  At this time my route takes my south to Bogotá and then back north to Venezuela.

Bogotá - Bogotá is the capital, and largest city, of Colombia.  Bogotá is the most populous city in the country.  Bogotá and its metropolitan area had an estimated population of 8,567,000 in 2009.  I read that it is also one of the most dangerous cities.

In terms of land area, Bogotá is the largest city in Colombia, and one of the biggest of Latin America.  It figures amongst the thirty largest cities of the world and it is the third-highest capital city in South America (after La Paz and Quito).
